They got him!

No, no alien abductions :) Tom finally got into the neurologist for his further testing. Just waiting to hear on the results in the next week or two. He has hasn't had anymore episodes since the one over Christmas break so we are hoping whatever it was has passed. Here are the pictures he loved me taking so much. *EG*

Sharing the Gospel

As I sit here I am listening to Tommy on the phone with his friend. They start by talking about school and all then teen stuff. Then out of the blue heasked his friend "Do you believe in God?" I'm thinking 'Oh no!'. For those of you who know Tommy, you know why :) Next thing you know for the past 10 minutes and still going he is sharing all of the things we believe in. He's telling him about the gospel. Explaining the Holy Ghost to him. Talking to him about how he prays to our Heavenly Father and how he should try praying when he is having hard times. He's telling him how we have the Book of Mormon that we read along with the Bible. He's reading the Articles of Faith to him and explaining them. He's telling him about our prophets and how Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon.
Now, this is not a new thing for him. He shares the gospel with whoever will listen. It makes me sit and think about how hard it is for some of us to share the gospel. I even struggled whether or not to post this little blurb. It amazes me to this day as many times as I have heard him talk about the gospel with others. He is one of our Heavenly Fathers special spirit children. He is a small child inside a teenagers body. He knows that he is different and does not let it get him down. I am amazed how with everyday things that the information isn't retained well. But you put the scriptures in front of him and he reads them with little struggle. He soaks up the information like a sponge and retains it to share later. By the way, it's been 40+ minutes since the conversation with his friend started! What a great example our children can be to us. Maybe we should listen a little closer to them and follow their example more often!

An "Awwwww!" Moment

It's moments like what happened this morning that make me proud to be a mom! Jerrud has had a very heavy backpack the past couple of days. So heavy the poor guy can't hardly lift it, let alone get it over his shoulder. Just about every morning, him and Corbin race out to the bus. It's kind of sweet though because they will usually catch up with each other and wait until they are together to walk onto the bus. This morning they went to race and Jerrud got a little upset because he couldn't run with his heavy bag over his shoulder. So Corbin stopped and turned around. He went behind Jerrud and with one hand holding his own backpack, he used the other hand to help lift Jerrud's so it wouldn't be so heavy for him!! Together they walked the rest of the way to the bus. Jerrud got on first and Corbin was right behind him still helping hold that bag while he's climbing up the bus steps.

I would classify that as a priceless moment!!

Plaster Creations

"Plaster Creations" is such a fun place! For anyone who doesn't know what it is. You go in and buy a plaster piece of your choice (hundreds to choose from). Then you sit there and paint it. You can take it home the same day. Jerrud and Corbin went to friends (Bess) birthday party that was done there.

Corbin chose a 3 dimensional race car to paint. Jerrud did a box with a lid that had a monkey on it. They both did a good job since they took a lot of patience!

The birthday party included a piece for each child, a soda, 2 slices of pizza and then they bring their own cake. Cynthia did her beautiful doll cake. Barbara (the owner) put the candles in the cake...lol...We were trying to figure out what she was doing when she put them on there! We love you anyways Barbara :)

The kids all had fun. What a great idea for a birthday party! I definitely will be going back. I fell in love with a "patchwork" frog that I could work well into my decor :)

Natures Wonders

A few days ago we had some on and off rain. Then out of the blue it started to hail. When you are down south, that is a scary thing! At least to us northerners :) Right after it ended though, I looked out our back door and saw a double rainbow!! You have to look close at the picture because it doesn't show up real well. Out the front door there were clouds and sunshine.
I love what was created for us to enjoy on this earth!

Christmas Town USA-McAdennville

Just a couple of days before Christmas Mom, Dad, Jerrud, Corbin, Tommy, David & I drove to McAdenville to see the
*Christmas Town USA*
So we drove down there and sat in traffic that was at a stand still. It took us an hour to drive 6 miles! Traffic was insane! So we finally turn the corner and there are trees and trees full of uncountable numbers of lights top to bottom! A cut out of Santa was standing there to greet us. A little ways down the street there is a neighborhood Santa sitting in a rocking chair waving to the passer-byers. The lights on the trees were amazing! The houses were very simple with a few lights as accents and some garland and wreathes. The neighborhood winner of lights added a few reindeer and a Merry Christmas sign. Now, they have rules they follow. They are only allowed to use red, white & green lights. I'm not sure about the cans and cannots from there. There were a few inflatables and cut-outs, but most were just simple. There was also a nice nativity set up in the town by the YMCA.

They had a red white and blue tree with a sign saying:

"In honor of the brave men & women in the armed forces"
We thought that was a nice thing to do.

I think our favorite part was the lights on the trees that lined the water and there animated Santa face that was blowing snowflakes. Then there was a fountain in the center with lights that changed color. The pictures aren't real clear and are pieced together. I wish I could have gotten a better shot of it all the way up and down the side. The reflections just added to it. The pictures don't do it justice!

We've been wanting to get there and we finally did. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty. It just wasn't quite what we expected. We were kind of expecting crazy light decorations everywhere. Now we hear rumor that this is the last year they are doing it. We don't know for sure though. We are glad we went. It was some nice family time spent together. I think the kids favorite part was when we stopped at the gas station on the way out and they got donuts! Why didn't we think about that the hours before we sat in the traffic lines!!

We had a WONDERFUL Christmas!

What a fantastic Christmas this year turned out to be for our family! For starters, Ray came home on Christmas Eve for 4 whole days!! That was the best gift! Nobody got up in a hurry. Just kind of staggered out of bed here and there. How unusual! The kids buried their heads while the pickle was hidden on the tree. Tommy found it in 07' so he couldn't look in 08'. So in 08' Dustin found it and won't get to look in 09'. He got to open his Santa gift first. He got 2 matted Dallas Cowboys prints of some of the players. Tommy's was a record player with a cd player, cassette deck, mp3 hook up and am/fm stereo. All the boys love vinyl records! David got a digital camera. He's been wanting one to take pictures everywhere he goes! Jerrud got a nifty microscope. He spent time looking at boogers, toe jam and toilet water. Such a boy!! Corbin got a variety pack of transformers. He loves the complexity of them transforming.Grandma Exckert got them the game "Baggo". You might have read it in a post we did right after Thanksgiving. We had a blast playing at their Uncle Dave's home with her! Their Grandpa Buster and Grandma Norma got them a 16-in-1 game table. Lot's of options to play for all ages! They also got them a snowboarding game that hooks to the t.v. They control it by standing on a board. Grandma & Grandpa Brown go them toys and clothes and cars and puzzles. They loved going through everything and seeing what they were going to open next! Grandma Forbes sent money for each of them. It's burning holes in their pockets!
I got my baby sugargliders a couple of days earlier. David got me a Willow Tree firgure to add to my collection. He got Ray and Marine Semi-truck. Precious tried joining in on the fun by chasing Jerrud's flying toy! She caught it a couple of times too!
When everyone was done it was time to clean up so they could find their gifts! Ray and I spent a large part of the next 2 days putting together the game table! Also he was home to help with the technical stuff with their things as well. We all had a wonderful day. It was nice with all 7 of us home togther for a few days!

Season's Blessing's

Christmas tends to be a time of year that everyone get the most concerned about worldly things. Getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of shopping and chaos. It so easy for us to forget what Christmas is really about! We are just as guilty as the next. But more than ever, during this Christmas season we have pondered a lot on how we live our lives day to day. We have focused a lot over the past year how to stay strong during the challenges that were placed in front of our family. As other families, we struggle to find the strength to endure, but we know that through our faith in Christ that He will give us the strength we need. We know our struggles will continue, but we will know how to get through them and learn from them. And for that, we have a special place in our hearts for Christ this holiday season. Our family has been truly blessed and we can't ask for anything more in life. So let us not forget our Heavenly Father and His son Jesus Christ. Remember to keep Him in your heart during the holiday season and continue to throughout the new year. He will always be there for us no matter what time of year it is!

Christmas Traditions

We have traditions that started when I was a young child that we still do today with our children.
Growing up in Europe for the first 8 years of my life, we picked up the tradition of hiding a pickle on out tree. Whoever finds it first gets to open the first gift. But if you found it this year, you can't look next year!
As long as I can remember, we have had this wooden train that we bought from a man that did woodworking in Germany. My mom and dad started a collection of characters to put on it. Every year adding to it. Unfortunately, moving around so much, a lot of them have gone missing :( But we still get new ones every year. We have everyone from the Smurf's to the Jetsons. Spiderman, Mickey Mouse, Barney, Lion King, Pooh and the Incredibles. Our newest one that we got for 08' was Wall-E, the adorable little robot.
We have always had a nativity set. We had one for the longest time and it was on it's last leg. So in 1999, mom and I went on the hunt for the perfect nativity set. We found it! We fell in love with it the moment we saw it! We got two sets. One was the manger with all the little accessories they might have had in there back then and some animals. The second part of the set was the figures. We love it! Then when Ray and I were visiting his mom one year in Colorado, she gave us an all white nativity set she had made. It has very special meaning to us both. We love them both, so we display both. Then we have a third one that is our tiny glass one. I'm hoping to get the Willow Tree collection nativity soon as well. I think I need a bigger house! Our tree is decorated every year with a lot of special ornaments. Most of them have a special meaning to us. From some we got in Germany when I was a child, to the bunches of them that Ray's Grandma Allstun made. Then we got some for special events in our life. As our kids got older, they started making them and added to our collection. We always have an angel on top of the tree. Unfortunately we had to retire ours this year. She had issues about staying together on top of the tree! We always had a real tree growing up. When we moved to NC, after the frist couple of years seeing the price of them here, we opted for an artificial one. I'm really missing the real ones and hoping to switch back to the real thing some time soon! Every year I love checking the mail! It's so wonderful getting things that aren't bills in the mail! Every year as I get the cards and read the newsletters, I find somewhere to display them. It reminds me of how many people love us. We always send out our annual card and newsletter with a family picture each year. I know a couple of years we missed but this year we sent around 70 of them! I think we broke a record this year! I love my house at Christmas time. It seems so cozy and inviting. I almost wish I could leave it up all year round! I hope that as the years go on, the children leave home and remember the things that were special to them. And that they can begin their own traditions as time goes on.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Wow! So 2008 has come and gone. I'm starting the new year still behind one here...oops! What can I say, life happened :) So it's that wonderful day everyone says they are going to start those resolutions they've been waiting all of last year to start. So why can't we start them whenever we want during the year? What is it about a new year that makes us want to wait until then to start? Who knows! I surely don't :)
Well, we rang in the new year simple at home. Mom, dad and David came over. Everyone minus Ray and our 18 yr old wanderer who has spent most of break at a friends house. Ray was spending his new year moving his things from his current truck, to a newer model truck that the company assigned him. He was excited about that! Men and their toys :) At the homefront, we visited, ate, did puzzles, watched t.v., played with toys and played games on the computer. A couple of them even talked non-stop right on through the new year...*cough, cough*...David & Tommy.
We invented a new non-edible recipe for shrimp dip...lol...Thanks Annette! Let me tell you about this interesting event that took place and a little story behind it. We grew up in NY with the Miller family. They are wonderful friends! For a lot of events there would be this shrimp dip that they would make. Always very yummy and it even looked great! Thinking of it the other day and not having it in such a long time, we decided we wanted some for our "party". So I called my dear friend, the daughter of the friends that always made it. She gave me a list of ingredients and a very vague recipe to follow. Let's just say, something was not right there! Mom made it accordingly. She brought it to my house and something wasn't looking right...or tasting right for that matter! I called my friend back and she realized she had given us an incorrect ingredient! So, since the first version was non-edible, there I went to the sink and washed the gelatin mixture off of the shrimp. Hey, don't laugh! I didn't have the heart to let the good shrimp go to waste :) So I check for the ingredients around my kitchen and I actually have them all. So I make it all over, stick it in the fridge and wait. Check it. Check it again and again. It's not setting up!! So now what are we going to do! It looked good, it tasted right but it just wasn't working. Ohhhhh the frustration! We were all so looking forward to it. So here we have the shrimp covered in a gelatin concoction that we are suppose to be able to spread cream cheese over the top once it has set up. Well, let's just say, it didn't become one of those pretty dishes you would serve anywhere but at a close family gathering! Use your imagination. It turned out looking like a pretty scary, chunky soup. But, don't let the look fool you...it still tasted pretty darn good on the crackers! Thanks anyways Annette! It didn't become a total waste at least :) Julienne, I need the real recipe with measured ingredients this time please!
Now that that story has been told, on with the evening. This is the first year Jerrud and Corbin have stayed up until midnight. We told them all about how the ball on the roof of the building drops. They were excited but a little confused. Then Grandma jokingly says to them that she is going to climb the big tree out front and drop a really big ball from the top. Sadly, they believed her. About an hour before the ball drop Corbin says to me "Is it time to go outside and watch Grandma drop the ball yet?" I just laughed and explained to him that that wasn't really happening. He seemed a little disappointed about the whole thing. Poor guy! So a little later, the countdown begins for the ball drop...15, 14, 13,....4, 3, 2, 1 HAPPY NEW YEAR! Everyone starts saying, except Jerrud and Corbin. They are sitting there staring at the t.v. and saying "That's it?! Why didn't they drop the ball off the roof?" And off with playing again! Needless to say, I don't think they were quite expecting it to happen that way!
A small family gathering, but it was still fun. So off with another year of the good and bad times. The happy and sad moments. The fun and laughter and tears. But the best part of it is that we still have our family to do it all with all over again!
Happy New Year Everyone!
